Why one-prompt video tools change your lead's face from shot to shot, and the reference-sheet, stills-first way to keep the same person on screen.
The most common complaint about AI video is that the main character doesn't stay the same person. In one shot she has a scar over her eye; in the next it's gone. The coat changes colour. The face drifts a little each time, until by the end of the video it's someone else.
This happens because most tools make each shot from words alone. Every new prompt is a fresh guess at what "a woman in a grey coat" looks like. The fix is to stop describing the character every time and start showing the model who she is.
A reference sheet is a small set of pictures of one character: a full-body view from the front, the side and the back, and a few faces (neutral, tired, angry). It's what animation studios hand to every artist on a production so they all draw the same person.
In Inkreel each character gets a sheet in Cast. You can upload pictures you already have, generate them, or upload one picture that shows several views and crop each view out of it. Write down what the character looks like and wears in the sheet's notes too: build, hair, face, the coat, the props they always carry.
Do the same for places that come back (a bar, a kitchen, a street) and make one style frame: a single picture that sets the look of the whole world, drawn or photographic.
Look at the sheet as a whole. Are the front and side views clearly the same person? Is the coat the same colour in every view? Fix anything that's off now, because every shot will copy it. In Inkreel you can redo a single picture with a note, mark up just the part that's wrong and redo only that, or flip it.
When it looks right, approve it.
This is the step that matters most. Before any video is made, make one still per shot. Each still is generated with the reference pictures of every character in the shot, the place's views and the style frame attached as references, not just a text prompt.
Because every still starts from the same pictures, the face, build and clothes carry over. Inkreel attaches the right sheets to each shot automatically, from the cast and place you list for that shot in the storyboard.
Look at the stills side by side. A still is cheap to redo; a video clip is not. If one shot drifts, redo just that still: with a note ("hat brim lower"), by marking up only the wrong part, or by telling it to match the shot before it. When every still is right, approve them.
When a clip is nearly right, don't remake it: have the model change only what you point at. Describe the change in words, or pause the clip on a frame and draw a box around the problem. The rest of the clip, and the face in it, stays as it was.
Characters are half of it; places are the other half. Shots in the same scene should look like the same place at the same moment. In Inkreel you can group shots into a scene and give the group its time of day, light, weather and what each character wears. The first approved still of the group becomes the master shot, and the other shots are made to match it and the shot before them. A continuity check puts the stills side by side and can flag likely drift, such as a jacket that changed colour, for you to confirm.
Each approved still becomes a short clip. Because the clip starts from the still, it starts from the right face. Choose a video model that takes a starting picture. Text-only video models can't keep characters consistent, whatever the prompt says.
The second episode in a world shouldn't start from nothing. If the trailer already has the establishing shot of the saloon, the new episode should use that still, not a fresh guess at the same place. That's cheaper, and it's the strongest consistency there is: the same picture.
In Inkreel, a new project in the same studio is offered its earlier projects' stills, clips and sounds wherever the scene is the same place with the same people, and the storyboard writer can be told what exists so it writes those scenes to match on purpose. Nothing is copied until you click, and it costs nothing when you do.
Inkreel is built around exactly this order. See the pricing or read how the templates work.
